Mercy College Belfast has a proud tradition rooted in the Mercy ethos, inspired by our foundress Catherine McAuley, who dedicated her life to education and care for those in need. The Sisters of Mercy brought this vision to North Belfast in the mid-19th century, and in 1960 Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School opened its doors, providing an “oasis of calm” and hope in a community facing many challenges during the Troubles. The school stood as a beacon of stability and compassion through those difficult years, committed to nurturing every child academically and spiritually.

Over the decades, leadership has guided the school through growth and change. Previous principals included Sr. Carmel, Sr. Regina, Peter Daly and others who upheld the Mercy tradition, leading to our current principal, Mr. Martin Moreland, who continues this mission today.

In 2017, Mercy College embraced a new chapter by becoming co-educational, welcoming boys alongside girls and reflecting our commitment to inclusivity and equality. This transition was part of a wider vision for all-ability education in North Belfast. Today, Mercy College remains faithful to Catherine McAuley’s belief that education transforms lives. Guided by the Mercy values of compassion, respect, and service, we strive to prepare young people for life with confidence, resilience, and hope.
